Frequently Asked Questions

What is construction visualization?

Construction visualization (CV) is simply the illustration of construction processes and issues. It’s part of a larger family of commercial art along with architectural illustration. Good commercial art begins with a message and commercial objective. Construction visualization differs from architectural illustration in several important ways. The objective of architectural illustration includes showing potential donors, user groups, and officials just how tantalizing an architectural space or building will appear. This is normally done to raise funds, support, or approval for design and construction. The focus is normally on surfaces and spaces. Architectural visualization (AV) is geared to showcase design features, so light effects, materials, and similar “garnish” is paramount. In this case, the sizzle sells the steak.

The illustration of construction underway is not as concerned with “garnish” as it is message. The internal structure, key mechanical equipment, construction zoning and phasing, staging, laydown, circulation, hoisting, and storage are a few of the more relevant CV matters. The AV animators and renderers are thus usually unprepared to produce CV. Construction visualization is concerned with the “guts” of a project, the things that make a construction site actually work. No amount of polish or pizzazz will convey what a builder needs to say during an interview. Ideally, CV is produced by someone acquainted with construction issues, from layback assumptions to building code issues, not just how to pop wheelies on a goosed up computer. Good CV must be about how a builder supposes the construction workflow will impact the normal operation of a worksite. Back to top...

So what is “Convincing Construction Visualization™”?

Vinci’s Convincing Construction Visualization™ is illustration of construction processes and issues that is presented in a manner that is rich enough for the non-construction individual to recognize and understand, but not so rich that we spend three months making ripples on puddles on the worksite. In short, it’s the art of making your message speak to the audience through images. Vinci sees objects in its visualization as words in a paragraph; each object should convey something about your message. “Garnish”, devices that make the visualization more visually appealing, should be subtle and minimal, only to help clarify the message.

Many are familiar with images produced straight out of construction management software with “4d” components. These can be exceedingly precise; they are effective tools for engineers and technical building professionals. Oftentimes, these are too technical for the decisionmakers interviewing you for a $200 million patient tower. Your audience is intelligent and professional, but they are not normally building professionals. Algorithmic visualization solutions only go so far. They can detect clashes, display workflow, but these are often in crude, garish and distracting colors. Because these algorithmic images are so “tinny”, it can be difficult for the audience to really follow what you’re trying to say. Algorithmic visualization is usually the graphic equivalent of shoptalk. Just listen to two doctors talking about their surgical methods. It’s all shoptalk; you’ll need an interpreter. Algorithmic visualization has its place, usually as communication between technical experts and analysts.

Vinci does not rely solely on any one particular software package to get the results you need. We go “off road” if necessary and “bash” that software so that it does what we want: we want to help you win that project, we are not interested in fancy computer animation awards or artistic recognition. The Final Art is more important than the process of producing that art. Above all else, your message is paramount.

An “algorithmic” construction visualization?

An “algorithmic” construction visualization is illustration sheerly produced by software. This is normally a “4d” or “5d” rendering function. Computer programmers are smart people that have produced amazing software that we use every day. They cannot have the direct experience that a building professional has. This is why straight algorithmic construction visualization cannot be relied on to produce convincing construction visualization. In its current conception, it cannot deal with the “beat to fit” realities of a real worksite.

Vinci™ Convincing Construction Visualization™ (CCV) uses software for its strengths, then ports the data to other packages when these present better economy or unique functionality. We aren’t married to a programmer’s conception of how you go about drawing a construction site. So Vinci will beat software to fit your application. Though Vinci has an organized methodology, we aren’t concerned with the “purity” of any production process, if it’s going to interfere with your message.

Does Vinci produce 4d or 5d animations?

Vinci illustrates milestones in a construction schedule and can illustrate multiple options either graphically or via the VinciMeter™. We avoid any “d” designation, including 3d, because these are often hype. We can indicate cost, manpower, fee used, months of construction, calendar dates – virtually anything you deem relevant to your presentation.

Recognize that Vinci construction visualization is geared towards marketing communications and relations between construction professionals and the general public. Vinci construction visualization can be used to conduct basic analysis of a worksite, such as clearance dimensions, depths of excavation, and other dimensions. This is limited by the type and quality of information on hand and the deadline we face. This said, the Vinci construction visualization is not intended to be a precision technical analysis tool. For precision technical analysis and engineering, construction management software and engineering firms are perhaps a better choice.

Does Vinci LLC produce construction documents?

No, Vinci LLC does not produce documentation for any sort of engineering, architectural, or surveying trade. Vinci’s founder is a Missouri-registered architect; this is a great aid in interpreting construction documents, completing the nascent design intent that an RFP might express, but Vinci is not an architecture firm. Vinci is technically a graphic design / commercial art firm which focuses on the illustration of construction underway. Vinci does not stamp drawings nor does it design buildings. Vinci may illustrate site utilities, but its output is not intended for precision engineering nor construction operations.

Vinci interprets the technical messages you wish to communicate to a general audience, presenting it to them in the form of a clear picture. Back to top...

Big deal, Vinci’s founder is a registered architect. What does that do for me?

A registered architect deals directly with the very design of buildings. We don’t just read about them, copy them out of a book, or guess at what the plans mean. Mike has drafted plans, sections, elevations, on CAD, mylar, vellum, and trace paper professionally between 1993 and 2004. So we can read plans; no handholding here. Mike has visualized architectural spaces since 1989, constructing perspectives by hand, sketching them, until the knack developed. We know not only how to draw, but what makes a drawing work. Mike has laid out stairwells and access ramps, corridors and kitchens, patient rooms and radiology suites. Mike has dealt with complex details like brick with CMU backup meeting a built-up roof system and metal panel on lightgage metal backup. Thus Vinci speaks the language of construction, not just of cool graphic-ese or geekspeak. Mike has passed the test; he’s familiar with building codes and the Americans with Disabilities Act. His education included a strong draft of structural training so he knows a great deal about bracing, zero force members, and bearing walls. In short, the biggest deal is you’ll spend hours babysitting the non architect just to get to the point where Vinci will begin. It isn’t even fair, a contest between Vinci and any single person from a rendering outfit.

Does this mean Vinci will never ask questions or clarify what you’re attempting to illustrate? Definitely not. We don’t know everything (that’s the province of the Man Upstairs. This is what puts our hat in our hands and keeps us humble.) We do like to have a clear idea ourselves of what you’re trying to say. Every person learns something new each day; we’re no exception.

We haven’t even discussed the five years’ experience directly with construction visualization. That distinguishes Vinci LLC even from the average architect. Vinci LLC is a graphic design firm familiar with the fastest and most effective tools, the design of buildings, American construction techniques, the construction marketing process, and has a library of tools and jigs tailored for the rapid development of convincing illustrations of construction underway. I agree, it is a big deal! Back to top...

How is Vinci different from the graphic designer down the street?

Vinci focuses on issues associated with the design and construction of buildings. Thanks to Vinci’s founder’s 10 year architectural experience in the field, Vinci understands construction issues to a greater degree than most graphic designers, who receive little education or experience with buildings or jobsites. The graphic designer will help you craft an attractive logo, newsletter, or annual report. Vinci doesn’t normally produce these things. Our focus is the convincing illustration of construction issues. Back to top...

How does Vinci differ from cool computer animation wizards?

There are plenty of architectural rendering firms across the country. These firms are armed with computer animation experts, the finest software, the fastest computers, and an artist’s attitude. Our production may lack the finish and the effects that these wizards can produce.

Vinci LLC instead focuses on your message; your presentation strategy is paramount. Vinci’s convincing construction visualization™ techniques are devised to render your message clearly and succinctly to an audience mildly familiar with building construction. We aren’t specialists in producing special effects, fly-throughs, and glossy pamphlets. Vinci regards each element of its construction visualization as words in a paragraph. Each object in the image should communicate something to the audience. Sure, garnish is necessary to make an image appealing, but your content is king at Vinci LLC. We’re not interested in artistic awards (although we’ll take them if offered) or making a “statement”. Vinci is focused on helping your company win that project. The statement we like to hear is “Vinci, we won that job!” Back to top...

What makes Vinci different from architectural illustrators at our favorite architecture firm?

Most architecture firms focus on the design of buildings and production of construction documents. These firms may offer the owner renderings which aid understanding of their design intent. In some cases the illustrations can be used to win government or community approval or raise construction funds.

Vinci’s focus is on the convincing illustration of construction processes, schedule, and issues that a builder deems necessary. Most of Vinci’s portfolio consists of visualization produced under three weeks from deadline, with incomplete information, late breaking changes, working closely with construction professionals and the presentation team on interviews for projects which average around $70 million. This is what we do; it is not an add-on or freebie we wave our hands at if it gets difficult. Architects design buildings and spaces; Vinci illustrates construction underway. Back to top...

Our guys can do this.

You may be right. Vinci LLC has worked with a wide variety of commercial and institutional builders across the country. The Vinci production process is tested in the marketplace and is rather effective. Vinci works with in-house graphic departments in plenty of situations, and is comfortable letting your people do what they can to contribute to a successful effort. Use whatever portion of the process that suits your needs. What Vinci brings to the table is a healthy capability to analyze proposed building projects, an efficient and flexible method to model the construction of a building, and enough artistic sensibility to keep your audience as interested as they are going to be. This is the USA, if you think you can do it on your own, nothing is stopping you from proceeding. Vinci is here to help when and where you need it.

How does Vinci differ from those foreign rendering outfits?

Firstly, Vinci LLC is proudly American. Normally, that’s simply flag waving – nice to hear but doesn’t get you any real value. In this case, being American means a heck of a lot. Vinci’s founder was born and raised in the US, always with an eye towards building and construction. Thus Vinci is well-acquainted with the major construction techniques and the features of American construction worksites. Vinci even conducts worksite research whenever traveling, and has visited New York City (a place rich in tight sites) expressly to observe construction site layout. Those offshore rendering outfits might have the ability to chalk up a fancy architectural rendering, but the vagaries of a construction worksite will likely be a challenge. Try explaining steel pile shoring with whalers and tiebacks and wood lagging to a foreign technician with a fair grasp on conversational English. Try explaining phasing options and break lines at building separation joints to someone in Shanghai (not that there’s anything wrong with Shanghai or any other Chinese or foreign city).

Another benefit of Vinci’s construction visualization is its Vail™ technology. Vinci’s acquaintance with American construction also means that Vinci is mobilized to produce worksite visualization of that construction in rapid order, using objects crafted to industry standards. So don’t just “buy American”. Buy familiarity with construction methods predominant in America. Buy fluent knowledge of American construction and architecture, American ADA, American building codes. The Shanghai dude can put a fine polish on a glass skyscraper, but normally lacks the expertise in illustrating the development of a structural steel frame on a tight Midwestern site, on drilled piers with just in time delivery and union segregated construction entrances. (Know how to say that in Mandarin?) Back to top...

What software do you use?

This is perhaps the most often asked question. The response should be “what does it matter?” Let us explain. Vinci uses a combination of commercially available software, from Google® Earth® Pro to Autodesk® AutoCad®, from the Adobe® suite of digital illustration tools to humble Microsoft® PowerPoint®. Vinci’s founder has at least a dozen years of commercial practice using digital illustration tools, including CAD. They say it takes a decade to master a skill. So the software doesn’t matter nearly as much as experience and know-how. We all have hands and feet; we are not all black belts. We might buy a piano; not all of us will end up Mozart or Chopin.
Owning is not mastering.

If it’s compatibility you’re wondering about, Vinci LLC produces output in most major formats, from Adobe® PDF® to JPEGs. Vinci tends to use the commonest and simplest formats. The last thing you want to experience is a “broken arrow” or “bent spear” on interview day. Simple formats and relatively uncomplicated presentations reduce the chance you will be unable to fix things yourself if necessary if they prove troublesome.

To the students of visualization out there; no we don’t use the usual high functioning rendering packages. Vinci welcomes and respects the use of output from these packages, but the tweaking and tinkering with arsenals of nuance that accompany sophisticated rendering packages just doesn’t currently fit into the average project schedule. Construction visualization is more concerned with message than gloss. So its Google® SketchUp® Pro rather than the big boys. We don’t have time for light control or transparency settings.

Why Microsoft® PowerPoint®?

There are people for and against Microsoft’s flagship presentation software. Vinci selects PowerPoint as its principal tool for three reasons. Firstly, PowerPoint is rather ubiquitous: everybody has it and every office has someone who can use it effectively. Secondly, it’s convenient, stable, and time-tested. Vinci has produced hundreds of PowerPoint presentations at a wide range of file sizes from kilobytes to a quarter gigabyte, with minimal failures. Thirdly, it’s flexible. Because your company probably has someone (maybe even you) who knows how to edit a PowerPoint presentation, if you find something needs to change minutes before showtime, you can change it without consulting the gods. Vinci is not “married” to PowerPoint, and has its own thoughts about how the software handles design, etc. Vinci can compensate for some drawbacks PowerPoint may present. This does not detract from the efficacy PowerPoint brings. PowerPoint, in Vinci’s opinion, has significantly improved with its 2007 version.

Why Google® SketchUp®?

Quick answer: because it’s fast, uncomplicated, easily bashed, and offers a nice toolset. There was a time that Vinci’s founder shunned cute little SketchUp, from a cute company called @LastSoftware in Boulder, Colorado. Like a whimsically named damsel, surely, this software really can’t be serious!

Vinci used SketchUp from Vinci’s establishment in late 2004 to produce graphics that would be superimposed on aerial photography. Gradually, SketchUp evolved and its interface improved. New functions were added that facilitated an increasingly comprehensive production process. Google bought SketchUp to serve its Google® Earth® web application. SketchUp is quick and easy to use. SketchUp models are free of frills and malleable, so we can change things on the fly. SketchUp does not straitjacket creativity by presenting a rigid user interface; we can use it as we like. It has about the right amount of tools and capabilities for construction visualization. Currently, SketchUp processes comprise about 25-50% of project time, occupying the advanced phases of the Vinci digital modeling process. Vinci only reserves a few criticisms of the software. SketchUp is Vinci’s choice because it does what we need quickly and efficiently.

Why don’t you entirely use BIM?

Vinci regards every piece of software as a toolset, and will use certain tools in the set, leaving others unused, while sticking with trusty tools in other toolsets.

Like a master carpenter, Vinci regards its toolsets as useful for particular tasks. There are many kinds of hammers: some for driving rough carpentry nails, others for finish carpentry, others to extract nails. Using a nail gun for every application is just not what a master carpenter would do.

Vinci evaluates software for its benefits to the development of convincing construction visualization. The speed of development, ease of definition, concise precision toolsets, unique functions and amenities, flexibility, price, and interconvertibility with other software all factor into Vinci’s decision to use a piece of software. Vinci does not intentionally strategize not to use any particular piece of software. Building information modeling offers some attractive routines which may streamline production. We must keep in mind the purpose of BIM, despite what the software companies and industry wonks want us to believe. BIM is principally intended to produce construction documents. It is another kind of pencil in one’s drawer. Like CAD, modeling software, presentation visual aid software, photo editors, and plain old pencil and paper, it is one tool in Vinci’s arsenal. Can we work together electronically?

Sure! This is the twenty first century... Vinci has two significant clients on the east coast which never have been met in person. Vinci delivers most of its projects electronically, conducting teleconferences and sending electronic correspondence as needed to produce some of its finest, and more importantly, some project-winning work. A Vinci Convincing Construction Visualization™ was instrumental in one of our clients clinching a $1 billion aircraft facility. We’ve never even met!

Vinci has a file transfer protocol (FTP) site; alternatively, final art can be delivered to your FTP, broken up and e-mailed, send overnight, whatever it takes to get your construction visualization to you on time for your rehearsals or interview. Vinci has never missed a final deadline. What’s faster than overnighting it? How about downloading it as soon as it’s on the FTP? How about from anywhere in the world that can access the internet, including Antarctica and the International Space Station†? The great thing is, because nothing physical needs to be shipped, we can normally use that time and focus our efforts on producing and refining the visualization.

Of course, nothing is better than a face to face meeting, a work session, or Vinci’s OnSite Deployment™ in smoothly conveying your needs and reviewing output. These are certainly avenues for the production of good CV. Vinci offers OnSite Deployment™ free to its local loyal clients*. We just pop open the laptop and crank away right there in a free cubicle, a meeting room, a trailer, wherever you need.

(* Vinci reserves the right to offer or not to offer OnSite Deployment™ to any particular client, based on availability, cost of the service, or any other criterion. Additionally, fees may apply at Vinci’s discretion without prior notification.
† Of course, Vinci has never delivered service to Antarctica nor the International Space Station, but these are connected to the world wide web, and theoretically, could download Vinci visualization from Vinci’s or third party FTP sites.)

Can you work here?

The answer is yes, indeed, especially if you’re in town, or you will cover costs of transportation and lodging. Since Vinci’s establishment in 2004, all Vinci construction visualization processes have been designed for mobile workstations. This means wherever we can set up a Vinci laptop, we can get some work done. Certain restrictions and fees may apply.

Why haven’t we heard of you?

Vinci establishes business relationships with clients through word of mouth, the telephone book, and this website. Vinci’s work speaks for itself. This way you get the best service and attention from a real person. This may be subject to change without notice, but it’s how Vinci has operated since its founding in autumn 2004. We pride ourselves in the strong and continuing business relationships that Vinci has developed since 2004. Like some of our clients, we recognize that what we do isn’t a “gig”, it’s a long-term professional relationship.

So what’s it cost?

The Vinci™ convincing construction visualization™ service is comparable in cost to other visualization efforts. The exact price isn’t normally identifiable without an explicit written description of need, just as a solid building project estimate is difficult without a scope of work and program. Vinci offers ad-hoc agreements to serve your needs without a written description of need at the outset of your effort. This basically runs hourly for the time Vinci spends on your project. Of course, you can state a budget. When we are subject to a budget and a strict deadline under 30 calendar days from the point of inquiry, you should expect Vinci to apply restrictions to what can be accomplished. Vinci reserves the right to request you to prioritize development in order to reduce time billed to the project or to unilaterally limit what can be accomplished. With the ad-hoc hourly fee, this isn’t the case; Vinci will do what it can to attempt to represent everything you decide to develop, regardless of how late in the process your request arises (within reason). It should be understood that, from the average point of notification of a project, we face a hard deadline that is, on average, under three calendar weeks away. So what can be accomplished is usually limited by a rapidly approaching hard deadline. The kind and quality of data you supply or is commercially or publicly available also affects the output.

Vinci believes that the total fee for its projects is a deal compared to foreign and domestic architectural renderers, graphic designers, architecture firms, and even some in-house departments. This is because Vinci is nearly entirely focused on construction visualization, the illustration of construction underway. So we are mobilized to serve your effort, with a portfolio of nearly 100 interview efforts. Vinci is acquainted with lack of information, late breaking information, incomplete ideas, and other hiccups in the process of developing your construction marketing story. Odds are you will spend more time describing what you mean to that slick animation whiz then you will with Vinci. So yes, we have a market rate fee, but we’re ready to get down to business and produce good construction marketing illustration.

Why did you start this business?

There was no deliberate decision to start a construction visualization business. Maybe the best things start in garages and attics! Initially, Vinci’s founder intended to be a design architect, and never seriously considered construction illustration of any kind to be a viable business. Vinci’s founder, Michael Thomas De Vlieger, has always been skilled in art, science, code, and mathematics. Mike was the Crown Scholar at Illinois Institute of Technology's College of Architecture, graduating with honors in 1993. His first gigs in Chicago were rendering loft condos. He grew up with computers since 1979; not playing with them; making them work and producing design. Mike has always been fascinated with buildings under construction, and has a model paper city he built at age twelve to prove it. In Mike’s early career, rendering and modelbuilding were seen as backwaters and ruts that would destroy a chance to be a star design architect. (Guess what... it did... happily it did!) Business ownership was a remote concept for the young architect.

The need arose while Mike was still employed at a Saint Louis architecture firm, and techniques began to develop to fulfill those needs. Vinci’s founder had a 1998 goal of putting a design office in his backpack; the ultimate mobile office. So he already had his own mobile system and graphic and CAD software licenses. Mike developed software routines and work processes that introduced new capabilities and functionality to his office. Within a year of the first construction presentation in April 2003, Vinci’s founder began seeing viability as an independent businessman, so he left his employer on good terms, and began Vinci LLC in the attic.

Vinci believes that its construction visualization strategy is the best in the nation, and loves producing the work. It remains up to the Lord how long Vinci will enjoy the distinction. We have a passion for construction and the art of building. The founder feels it is his calling to produce convincing construction visualization, and wouldn’t think of doing anything else at this time. In this, Mike feels blessed to be doing what he loves, and to have a constellation of skills and talents to be doing this independently. So short answer: It was the path less traveled, and it is work that we love.

We have a good cause: do you do pro bono work?

Vinci does produce pro bono work at its discretion, championing certain causes and is willing to produce approximately 40-80 hours of work annually to causes it subjectively qualifies. Vinci’s discretion is final. Proving your organization is a non-profit organization helps. Vinci views pro bono work as work which Vinci is funding, thus, Vinci becomes a sponsor of the effort. We’re putting time and talent behind what it is you’re proposing. Cool things will develop, but we have to eat, so there are plenty of restrictions. Vinci does reserve the right to manage opportunity costs: the pro bono client must accept that it cannot capitalize on Vinci visualization beyond publicity, without the written permission of Vinci LLC. Vinci LLC generally will not assign rights to any visualization to a pro bono client without some form of adequate compensation. The pro bono project will proceed at Vinci’s discretion; strict or short deadlines are not acceptable. Pro bono clients may not request particular Vinci employees to produce their work. Such clients must agree without exception to all terms and conditions of service. Partial payment for Vinci services does aid in the production of pro bono work. Vinci offers payment plans which spread out the cost of visualization over time. Note that Vinci’s pro bono policies are subject to change without notice.
