Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy

Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy

Soon after arrival at Castiglion Fiorentino, a frazione of Arezzo, Tuscany, we architecture students gloried in the romantic, rustic setting of our study center. It was unlike anything I’d experienced, ancient, haptic, and patinated. Everything was on a precarious hill, in stone and stucco. The drawings on this page are representative of those in the book, all “rucisaime” pencil drawings. This page explores a scene southwest of town towards the ospedale, at left. Later that day during a lecture I doodle the nearby Collegiata bell tower, which had been sounding like a carillon the moment we arrived a couple days hence. Finally, I produced a sketch of the courtyard wall opposite the studio. These three sketches embody the flavors of drawing throughout the Italian phase of this sketchbook. The first sketch is looser than the rightmost sketch, which is more photorealistic. The campanile is more of a graphic caricature. Page drawn 16 January 1992 = Tayya 4679, four dozen sixth phase (Safyr-Apacinal Xrga). The decimals following the tayya dates are duodecimal times, e.g., .545 = approximately 10:44 am.
