Studies in Aix en Provence

The sketches on this page began on the train south from Paris to Aix-en-Provence. I’d been reading about the lives of artists since 1994. One of the minor objectives of the trip was to visit the Picasso and Rodin museums in Paris, and Cezanne’s studio in Aix en Provence. This would be the first stop away from Paris, and I’d visit Arles and Avignon, then Ronchamp. The passing landscape reminded me of Amtrak travel between St. Louis and Joliet, but of course was very different. The northern French villages seemed to have a similar layout. I attempted to capture it at the left side of the page, along with notes and a plan below it. At the Place de la Université in Aix-en-Provence, I sketched a plan and façades all around the square at right. The next day I drew a minuscule isometric of the interior of Cezanne’s studio, including the special door slot through which he passed his large paintings. Soon after this page was filled, word of a nationwide train strike altered plans to head to other towns and Ronchamp, and I left France via Marseilles and proceeded eastward to Italy along the Riviera. Produced 11 May 1997 = Tayya 5817, 12 May = 5818, five dozen eighth phase (Ñixaþ-Alindðal Xrga).
