The Roseann Sketchbook / Book of the Threshold

The Rykami Arysane was intended to be a book of experimental, loose drawings liberating me from stuffy, labor-intensive, monochrome rucisaime style pencil drawings prevalent since the Rykami Yasmyne.

I began the sketchbook in the Lakepoint era, in early 1995 shortly after moving to St. Louis, but most of its development was in the Amherst era, in the midst of a quarterlife crisis. The sketchbook ends up being a document of the crisis and its therapy, many of its stream-of-thought sketches, intended to be loosening, expressive exercises, became introspective. I unwittingly use an avatar called Icarus to explore my newfound circumstances in an alien southern city and deal with unresolved issues from university and even further back. Icarus appears at the threshold of his career, leaving a comfortable childhood and university s5231a01, and is pictured in color along with his boss s5231a13. The first half of the book illustrates Icarus defining and then sorting out problems in life. “The Life Stage Page” s5231a02 and “Getting out from under It All” s5231a22 illustrate that Icarus is aware of his faults and plans to get past them. He dreams of love s5231a16 and success s5231a56, but also considers shameful shortcomings s5231a28 and outright failure s5231a74. As we proceed through the illustrations generally we see Icarus maturing, growing in confidence, finding true love s5231a59. A couple studies in recent years pop up in the Rykami Arysane, increasingly analytical s5231a78, less self-referential s5231a87. The last parts of the book become purely intellectual, mathematical musings s5231a99 that require a set of numerals much larger than the ten familiar digits. By this point in my late thirties, the quaint problems documented in the sketchbook were distant and insignificant. I had grown into a busy, confident, independent businessman doing work I love, enjoying a sort of freedom and spiritual serenity few men come to know.

The Rykami Arysane is an artist’s sketchbook with all the trappings: experimentation, honing of technique, studies from life. The book is fraught with inextricable complexities of a polyvalent artist that develop along with the art. The book studies and incorporates constructed language and arithmetic in large number bases, processes that had their start along with nascent drawing skills of middle school. The Rykami Arysane was developed between 16 January 1995 (Tayya 5231) and 14 April 2009 (Tayya 8246). Unlike my other sketchbooks, it is a travelogue of a journey through my mind.
